Shopify out of stock: what to do when a product sells out
Checked against the live sources below on 27 October 2026.
You have four moves: hide the product, leave it visible and collect emails for the restock, take preorders if you can really ship later, or reorder sooner next time. Pick by how fast you can restock. The reorder point and safety stock calculators show how to avoid the next stockout.
Decide what happens to the page
Shopify’s help center says that once inventory tracking is on, you can decide what happens when a product is out of stock. Shopify’s Flow page also gives hiding out-of-stock products as an automation example. So hiding can be automated with a workflow.
- Hide it if the item is gone for good or restock is months away. Fewer dead ends, but the page is no longer there for shoppers.
- Keep it visible with a notify-me button if restock is soon. Shoppers leave an email and you win the sale back. See back-in-stock notifications.
- Take preorders only if you have stock arriving and a firm date. Selling what you cannot ship creates refunds and unhappy customers.
A quick rule: restock within weeks, keep the page and collect emails; restock in months, hide it or take dated preorders; never restocking, remove it and redirect shoppers to a close substitute.
Find out why it ran out
Most stockouts are one of three things: demand rose, the supplier was late, or the reorder went in too late. Compare your daily sales to what you assumed, your real lead time to the quoted one, and the stock level at which you placed the order.
- Demand rose: raise your safety stock, or reorder sooner for that product.
- The supplier was late: use their real average lead time, not the promised one, and add a buffer for the worst delays.
- You ordered late: set an alert at the reorder point, so ordering is triggered by a number rather than by memory.
Stop the next stockout
Work out a reorder point: the sales you expect during the supplier’s lead time, plus a safety buffer. Wikipedia’s safety stock article defines the reorder point as the inventory level that triggers an order, and says a higher service level needs more safety stock. The reorder point calculator and safety stock calculator do the arithmetic with your numbers.
Then make the trigger automatic. Our Low Stock Alerts & Notify Me app emails you when a product drops to your threshold, so the reorder happens before the page goes dead.
Work out the stock level that should trigger your next reorder.

Should I delete a sold-out product?
Not if it is coming back. Hiding or keeping it visible with a notify-me button preserves the page, while deleting removes it. Delete only items you will never sell again.
Is it okay to keep selling an item that is out of stock?
Only if you can ship it by a date you state clearly. Otherwise you are promising something you do not have.
How do I know when to reorder?
Compare your stock to your reorder point: daily sales multiplied by lead time, plus safety stock. The calculators above compute it.
How this page was researched
Read on 27 October 2026. The options are general practice; the Shopify behaviour, the Flow example and the reorder-point definition come from the pages below.
- Shopify Help Center: Inventory and locations — after you turn on inventory tracking you can decide what happens when a product is out of stock; purchase orders can be created from your Shopify admin
- Shopify Flow (shopify.com/flow) — Flow is described as no-code automation built from triggers, conditions and actions, with inventory examples such as hiding products when they are out of stock and reordering supplies when they are low
- Wikipedia: Safety stock — the reorder point is the inventory level that triggers an order; lead time is the delay between reaching it and renewed availability; service level is the desired probability of meeting demand during lead time without a stockout, and a higher service level needs more safety stock
- Low Stock Alerts & Notify Me on the Shopify App Store — low-stock email alerts the moment any product or variant drops to your threshold, one alert per dip with no repeats, re-armed when you restock; a notify-me button on sold-out pages that emails waiting shoppers on restock; the Free plan covers low-stock alerts and the back-in-stock button; Pro adds per-product thresholds, Slack and CSV
