Shopify invoice tax and VAT: what to check
Checked against the live sources below on 27 October 2026.
Check that an invoice shows what the customer actually paid, each tax line, your business name and tax registration number where one applies, a unique invoice number and the date. Which fields your law requires depends on where you and your customer are, so confirm them with your accountant. This is a checklist, not tax advice.
A checklist to look at
- Totals. Does the invoice match the payment, including shipping, discounts and tax?
- Tax lines. Is the tax shown separately from the price, in the way your accountant expects?
- Your tax ID. If you are registered for VAT, GST or similar, is the number on the page?
- Numbering. Is each invoice number unique and in a sequence? Gaps are easier to spot when numbers run in order.
- Dates and currency. Order date, invoice date and currency should be clear.
- The customer. Business customers often need their own name, address and tax ID on it.
What the sources say
Shopify’s pricing page lists automated sales tax calculations, tax liability tracking, and VAT validation, exemptions and invoicing among its tax features, and its plan comparison table marks all three as included on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus (an advanced tax platform is a separate add-on). Its tooltip describes the VAT feature as validating VAT numbers, automating exemptions and issuing VAT invoices for EU and UK sales. Included in a plan does not mean it covers your obligations, so confirm that with your accountant. FlatInvoice’s listing says it is tax-ready with a VAT/GST tax ID line and automatic sequential numbering, and that every invoice shows what the customer paid at the time of the order. Order Printer’s listing mentions invoice numbers among its customisation options.
A ten-minute review of your own invoice
- Place a test order in your store for a small amount.
- Open the invoice the customer would receive.
- Compare the total to the payment on the order.
- Check each tax line against what your accountant told you to expect.
- Check that your registration number and business details are right.
- Compare the invoice number with the previous one.
- Send a copy to your accountant once and ask what, if anything, is missing.
Repeat the review whenever you change tax settings, add a market or switch invoice tools. A fix at this stage costs nothing; a fix after a customer or an auditor spots it does not.
What a tool cannot decide for you
An app can print a field. It cannot tell you whether your business must charge a tax, which fields your tax authority requires, or whether your country mandates a specific electronic invoice format. If you may need such a format, look for a tool that names it; FlatInvoice’s listing does not mention one.

FlatInvoice for Shopify Install on ShopifyFrequently asked questions
Does a FlatInvoice invoice meet my country’s VAT rules?
We cannot say. The listing describes a VAT/GST tax ID line and sequential numbering; whether that satisfies your rules is a question for your accountant.
Should invoice numbers be sequential?
Sequential numbers make gaps visible, which helps with bookkeeping. Whether your law requires it is for your accountant.
Where do I enter my VAT or GST number?
In FlatInvoice, the listing says a tax ID line is included; the app’s setup screen shows where to enter it.
