Why is my Shopify store not selling? The five usual causes
Checked against the live sources below on 27 October 2026.
Stores that do not sell usually have one of five problems: too few visitors, a product page that does not convince, a price or margin that cannot work, friction at checkout, or products that search engines and AI assistants cannot find or read. Check each in order; the check for each is below.
The five causes, and the check for each
1. Not enough of the right visitors
Check: look at sessions and where they come from. Tag your campaigns so you can tell them apart; the UTM builder makes the links. A handful of visitors a week is a traffic problem, not a conversion problem.
2. A page that does not convince
Check: open a product page on your phone as a stranger. Can you see price, shipping, returns and a clear photo without effort? Our 25-point checklist goes through it.
3. A price or margin that cannot work
Check: work out profit per order after product cost, shipping, payment fees and ads. If it is near zero, more traffic will not help. The profit margin calculator and break-even calculator show it.
4. Friction at checkout
Check: compare carts started with orders completed, then buy something yourself. Baymard Institute’s average of 50 studies puts documented cart abandonment at 70.22 percent, so some loss is normal; the question is whether yours is far worse. See abandoned cart recovery.
5. Being found, by people and by AI
Check: search for your product by its plain name and see whether you appear. Then see whether an AI assistant can read your store. AI Store Shopper’s free scan takes about 60 seconds with no signup, and on Shopify the Aivis app has a free plan that shows AI orders and what is wrong.
What to fix first
Work in this order: margin, then checkout, then the product page, then traffic. If the margin is thin, every other fix just adds work for no profit. If checkout leaks, traffic is wasted. If the page does not convince, ads buy visitors who leave. Only once the first three hold does more traffic pay.
Change one thing at a time and give it enough visits to mean something. A store with very few visitors cannot learn much from a single week.
Where a free check helps
The free scan answers one narrow question: can an AI shopper find your products, read them and reach the cart? It cannot tell you whether anyone will search. Treat it as one input beside your own numbers, and use the Aivis free plan if you want a view inside your admin.
Start with the check you can do in a minute: can AI shoppers find and read your store?

How long should I wait before worrying?
There is no fixed number. If you have steady visitors and no orders, look at causes 2 to 4; if you have almost no visitors, look at cause 1.
Should I cut prices first?
Only after the margin check. A discount on a thin margin can make each sale lose money.
Does an AI scan help a small store?
It tells you whether AI assistants can find and read your products. Whether they send you sales is not something any scan can promise.
How this page was researched
Read on 27 October 2026. The five causes are our own framing from the buyer’s side; the abandonment average comes from Baymard’s page; the scan and Aivis facts come from their live pages.
- Baymard Institute: Cart abandonment rate statistics — an average documented cart abandonment rate of 70.22 percent, calculated from 50 different studies
- AI Store Shopper — a free scan takes about 60 seconds with no signup or email; the report is $149 today and "The Watch continues at $29.99/month after 30 days — cancel anytime" (the page’s own words); the report is a real-browser walk by an AI buying agent (find, read, add to cart, reach checkout) that never places an order; grades four areas; up to three free rechecks in 45 days; available to US merchants only; described as one dated snapshot, not a certification
- Aivis on the Shopify App Store — a free plan that shows AI orders and what is wrong with your store; Aivis Pro adds who AI recommends instead of you, one-click fixes you approve, and ongoing monitoring; AI-visibility score for your catalog
